you can try to do it at once. Some people have the willpower to succeed
in this way. Most of the people fall back after a while in their
old habit. And at the same time their willpower weakens.
On
the contrary, every time you succeed in achieving a goal you have set,
your willpower and your self confidence grow.
Here
are a few tips and I hope they will help you to succeed.
How to Break
Bad Habits
Before
breaking the habit you want to get rid of, prepare yourself so you will
know what you can expect when you really start breaking. Take one habit
at the same time if there are more then one you want to loose.
Bad
habits are most of the time a way to suppress feelings you don't like
and that you are not conscious about. That's why it seems that these
habits give you a positive feeling. So what to do?
Let me explain by the
example of smoking.
Every time you get
the urge
to light a cigarette, postpone it a while and be aware of the feelings
that come up. Angry, that you cannot have what you want immediately?
Grieved? Feeling lonesome?
What feeling
it may
be, let it be for a while. Take good notice of this feelings, because
this is where you will have to deal with when you start breaking bad
habits.
Look where your feelings bring
you. Is
there something that happened in the past that you did not or could not
cope with? You are now able to acknowledge this and to make your
homework.
Find good new habits to develop.
Something you like to learn or to do. Then you will have to make a new
habit while you get out of a bad habit. It will divert you from the
negative feelings that will come up.
I
know that this will cost more effort then it has been said. But when
you succeed, I promise you that you will appreciate life much and much
more. And don't forget to reward yourself for every little step forward
you make.
